You have a fuel delivery problem - and I bet that it is in the fuel tap problem that has been explored here previously - given the age of your machine it is due for this issue.
Start your bike - when it starts to backfire - put the fuel selector into the prime position and see if it settles down and starts running properly -
Some folks here have replaced the vacuum driven fuel selector with a new unit - others have managed to change it to a conventional fuel shut off tap.
